A 21-year-old bowler from South Africa, Lungi Nagidi, has his international Test career debut as a dream. Nagidi, who made his debut against the strong Indian cricket team, took 6 wickets for just 39 runs in the second innings. This helped South Africa beat Team India by 135 runs to win the Test series. Nagidi received the Man of the Match award in his debut match.
However, after losing the Test series 2–1, Kohli's team made a great comeback and beat the African team 5–1 in the ODI series. Nagidi was also part of the ODI series. Meanwhile, he was bought by Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in the Indian Premier League (IPL).
How did he get attracted to cricket in Durban for the first time?
There was a field in front of his house. he used to visit his father every weekend where he sees children playing cricket. Eventually, I too expressed a desire to play and from here there he fell in love with cricket.
How did his childhood shape him as a cricketer?
in an interview he told"my family was unable to buy the cricket kit. When I arrived for the trial and was selected for the district competitions, I did not have the batting equipment. I felt that there is an opportunity to become a bowler. It was from here that I moved forward to become a fast bowler."
Staying away from home, I understood that I really had the opportunity to advance in the game. It was not just cricket at that time - I was also playing rugby. I had not made up my mind until I was going to high school and was probably in 10th grade, I decided to pursue cricket. After all these years, cricket allowed me to bring my parents to Johannesburg for the first time, stay in a hotel and watch me play Test cricket.

"Staying away from the house, I realized that there is an opportunity to really progress in the game. At that time I am playing not only cricket but also rugby. At first I did not know what to do. In the tenth, I decided to play cricket. After this I got a chance to bring my parents to Johannesburg for the first time, they got to stay at the hotel and see my first test. Many people do not do this but through cricket I have been able to improve the life of my parents."
Why did you choose cricket over rugby?
My high school coach Shane Gaffney, who was also the coach of African team opener Temba Bavuma, said for the first time that I can play for the country. He was just 15 years old at the time. I trusted him. He also kept his promise. He was present at the stadium during my first Test.
What were you feeling during the first test at the home ground?
On the first day I was nervous among the best players in the world. I could not stop thinking that this was my beginning. Two things were going on in my mind. First, it is my home ground where I play for the Titans and second here we can win the series.
I knew that bowling in front of world number one batsman Virat Kohli, everybody is watching. It was a challenge for me. I felt that such opportunities are rare and should be made special. We had a good rivalry.
You took 6 wickets in the second innings ...
in the second innings, I was the Confidant. The crowd was cheering me on. When I scored my first run there was a great response from the audience. I did not expect this and it was special for me. On the fourth day of the match we knew that Virat's wicket would take us to a good position. We were working in that direction. Then I got the wicket of Virat which gave the team a lot of energy. The next day, I was talking to Vernon (Philander) and he told me that there is a chance of winning for South Africa. So I was working hard and was able to take a few wickets.
One day series against India was not good, what was your experience?
It tells you that international cricket is never easy. India's batsmen were in good form during the ODI series. Their spinners put us under a lot of pressure and won the series. Still, I enjoyed the challenge
Did you expect to appear in the Indian Premier League (IPL) auction? Will you play alongside Mahendra Singh Dhoni for CSK in the 2018 IPL?
No, I (laughs) knew that I had a good domestic T20 series and the first few international T20 matches. I expected to be elected and was also upset about it. I did not watch the auction because we were playing a test match. After the game, I checked my phone and everyone was congratulating me. I asked "what" and then I realized that I had been selected by CSK.
I have been to India previously with the South Africa Under-19 team, but the IPL feels like a big stage. I will have to play with Dhoni, which is a dream come true for any young cricketer.
